The Value of Regional Arts

What is the real value of regional arts? Everyone has there own opinion on why the arts is important in regional Australia?

  • The arts generates jobs and tourism throughout the country
  • The arts keeps doctors in country towns
  • The arts celebrates uniqueness of a place
  • The arts tells stories and keeps history going from generation to generation
  • The arts bring communities together

But what really is the value of the arts? Why do we care so much if funding is cut? Aren't there more important things for the government to spend its money on?

Approximately 36% of Australia's population live regionally, but what is the value of the arts to all of us?

The arts strengthens communities and brings people together. It's a reason go out and have a laugh, and some fun - particularly when times are tough. Let's calculate the dollar value of all the hours work of the tireless and dedicated volunteers. Then compare that to the input of government funding.
