ArtsYakka
The foundation information for ArtsYakka is drawn from Ideas into Action, compiled and edited by Judy Pippen (2008). The full document can be downloaded in from the site in the relevant chapters.
After plenty of yakking with country artsworkers, we heard loud-and-clear that you wanted: practical resources to reduce 'reinventing the wheel'; inspiring ideas from other country arts experiences; and a way to talk to other like-minded community champions.
The site is a Queensland Arts Council initiative, which was made possible through the Australian Government’s regional arts program, Regional Arts Fund (RAF), which gives artists and communities throughout regional, rural and remote Australia better access to opportunities to practice and experience the arts. The foundation information for the site is from Ideas Into Action, another RAF funded QAC initiated project.
Co-writers Audrey Hutchison, Sylvia Langford, Shelley Pisani and Judy Pippen have combined their experience and research to create this practical guide.
A note from Dr Judy Pippen's foreword:
This resource is designed for people active in their communities who need a ready reckoner for organising creative experiences and for understanding the role of these experiences in building their community and their local economy. It has tried to simplify the overwhelming body of information available today about how to conduct arts and cultural activity. At the same time it aims to act as a conduit into that world of information through providing linkages to print publications and the World Wide Web.
The writers envisage cultural and creative industry development in community that engenders playfulness, builds trust and respect, tells stories that cross physical and social barriers, invents new ways of doing things, makes ephemeral and lasting images, celebrates style, identity and place and sometimes makes money.
To this end Audrey Hutchison, Sylvia Langford, Shelley Pisani and Judy Pippen have combined their experience and research to create a practical guide around the themes of: managing events and festivals; networking and marketing; access and participation; the employment of artists and working with volunteers; building partnerships and encouraging entrepreneurship.
While the resource is designed for rural and regional Queenslanders, much of the material will have resonance nationally.
Engagement with community is at the heart of every section of this resource.
